The original Ferris Wheel was designed and constructed by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. as a landmark for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The term Ferris wheel later came to be used generically for all such structures, and Ferris wheels are now the most common type of carnival ride at state fairs in the US.

The leaning buildings of Santos (9 pictures)

The city of Santos in Brazil has a very special problem. Under the 7 meters of sand on which a lot of the buildings were built in the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s, there is a 30-meter layer of very slippery clay. The buildings do not cope well with it.

London fog of 1952 (26 pictures)

When a thick fog engulfed London from December 5 to December 9, 1952, it mixed with black smoke emitted from homes and factories to create a deadly smog. Approximately 12,000 people died. This smog shocked the world into starting the environmental movement.

2013 Hempfest in Seattle (34 pictures)

Seattle Hempfest is held the third weekend in August each year. The event spans three Seattle waterfront parks: Centennial Park, formerly Elliott Bay Park (North Entrance), Myrtle Edwards Park, and Olympic Sculpture Park (South Entrance).
