The Anti-Slavery Alphabet (15 pictures)

In 1846 a pair of Quaker sisters, Hannah and Mary Townsend, came up with an idea. They were abolitionists and actively campaigned against domestic slavery in the United States. They started educating young citizens and produced for this purpose a new way for the 26 letters to be taught by rote – the Anti-Slavery Alphabet.

Before he waged war on the world, Adolf Hitler was an upcoming (and unsuccessful) artist. He was rejected twice by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (1907-1908), because of his “unfitness for painting”. These are just some of his paintings he did before becoming the supreme ruler of the Reich.

London occupied by Gypsies (15 pictures)

A group of around 60 people believed to be Roma gypsies have set up camp on a grass island in central London’s prestigious Park Lane. Some of them beg on the streets of the West End. They are in constant battle with council officials who keep moving them on, but insist no returning to the encampment which is littered with soiled duvets and cardboard boxes.
