Three-Dimensional Mid-Air Acoustic Manipulation

The essence of levitation technology is the countervailing of gravity. It is known that an ultrasound standing wave is capable of suspending small particles at its sound pressure nodes and, so far, this method has been used to levitate lightweight particles, small creatures, and water droplets.

Fun with physics (15 gifs)

Physics is the way scientists explain how the universe works – from the smallest particles to the biggest galaxies. Usually we associate it with difficult or boring tasks and complicated formulas. But when you present problems and simple experiments illustrating the laws of physics in an accessible and interesting way it becomes great fun.

The Cubli: A Gravity-Defying Cube

The Cubli is a 15cm cube that can jump, balance on it’s corner and even walk. Reaction wheels mounted on three of the four cube faces rotate at a very high angular velocity then brake suddenly, causing a jump. Once the cube has almost reached it’s corner, controlled motor torques are applied creating a corner balance. Oh and it can also walk. Welcome to the future.
