How They Deal With Gangs in El Salvador

Imagine there are two gangs in your country and they fight each other notoriously, damaging streets and hurting innocent people. The only way to deal with them is to lock them up, right? That’s what they did in Salvador. Unfortunately, they went too far.

Cages, each 12 feet wide and 15 feet tall, are crammed with more than 30 people – all veterans of the country’s vicious war between the MS-13 and M18 gangs. Segregated along tribal gang-lines, the men in these inhumane cells are hidden from public view. The unprecedented truce between those two gangs helped bring murders down to an average of five per day from 12 before the agreement. But this is no success, keeping in mind awful conditions they are kept in.
