Salton Sea (5 pictures)

The increasing salinity of the Salton Sea has killed off millions of fish, their bones wash up on shore and make beaches. There is no sand in these pictures, just bones.

The Salton Sea was created accidentally in 1905 when an irrigation canal diverted from the Colorado River broke, it took two years for the lake to form.

The sea has no natural inlet or outlet, the salinity is increasing due to salt leeching the soil profile and irrigation water. The sea is 30% saltier than the Pacific Ocean.
