Arirang – North Korea’s first smartphone (6 pictures)

North Korea announced that their manufacture own mobile phone, based on the Android operating system. Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released new photos of leader Kim Jong Un examining the nation’s first smartphone on-site, at a factory.


Unfortunately specifications of this smartphone is not known . Experts say that the pictures of the factory are part of propaganda. The frames shown by KCNA shows workers checking and packing equipment, but there is no production lines. We only know that his name was taken from one of the North Korean folk song.

Mobile telephony in North Korea was introduced in 2008 by the Egyptian operator Orascom. The country has two million mobile phone users, who, however, can not call abroad. The Internet is used in North Korea by only 5 percent of the population of 24 million people.
