With the world’s food shortage hitting epidemic levels the ‘Cultured Beef’ project is taking the first steps to finding a sustainable solution to the production and consumption of meat. Over the next few decades it is estimated that global demand for meat will increase by more than 60 percent so scientists are looking to solve the problem by using technology. In 2008 professor Mark Post of Maastricht University started a project that culminate this week with the first ever edible lab-grown burger made from stem cells. It sounds shockingly disturbing but this beef patty isn’t much different than something you would get at your local butcher shop.
