The city of Santos in Brazil has a very special problem. Under the 7 meters of sand on which a lot of the buildings were built in the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s, there is a 30-meter layer of very slippery clay. The buildings do not cope well with it.
Whittingham Hospital was a psychiatric hospital in the parish of Whittingham, near Preston, Lancashire, England. The hospital was founded in 1869 and grew to be the largest mental hospital in Britain, and pioneered the use of electroencephalograms(EEGs). During its time it had its own church, farms, railway, telephone exchange, post office, reservoirs, gas works, brewery, orchestra, brass band, ballroom and butchers. It closed in 1995.

Today’s infographic reminds us exactly why there is so much work and care put into the large structures we build, since a few careless miscalculations can spell disaster for the building’s surrounding population.
For example, the Vdara Hotel in Las Vegas is one of many buildings in that famous city to have a unique shape or style, which isn’t an issue on its own. Unfortunately, the building’s curvature and reflective glass windows, when combined with the blistering Las Vegas sun, create spots of heat directly on the pool area hot enough to leave people with burns and melt objects.
The lesson here: architects must think of any and every possible issue a building may come across in its environment in order to ensure safety.
