The History of Same-Sex Marriage in the US in a Single Gif

What a difference 20 years can make. After last Friday’s landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, Mic.com created the informative gif above that shows the history of same-sex marriage in the US from 1995 to June 26, 2015.

In a narrow 5-4 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Court held that the recognition and provision of same-sex marriage is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Anthony Kennedy voted in favor while justices John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito voted against.
