Google Self-Driving Car on City Streets

It’s been a while since we’ve last heard from Google’s self driving car. Since their last update, the self-driving cars have logged over 70,000 miles in Google’s Mountain View, California. Main goal was to improve this self-sufficient driving machine abilities of driving in a crowded urban environment, not just a highway.

Google’s software is designed in such way it can detect hundreds of distinct objects simultaneously—pedestrians, buses, a stop sign held up by a crossing guard, or a cyclist making gestures that indicate a possible turn. The vehicle becomes aware of the orange street signs and immediately knows to be on the lookout for construction zones and detoured lanes.
