Historical photos of Everest conquered by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay 60 years ago (9 pictures)

On May 29, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal became the first people to scale the staggering 29,028 foot Mount Everest. Both Hillary and Norgay never revealed who reached the summit first maintaining that they reached it together.

They spent 15 minutes at the top and as the internet says pics or it didn’t happen Hillary knew the importance of capturing the moment for proof so he pulled a camera out of his shirt and snapped one of the most famous photos in history showing Tenzing on the top, waving his ice-axe which has a string of flags—British, Nepalese, United Nations, and Indian.
